You know the old saying, word of mouth is the best advertisement.

It wouldn't hurt to mention that you've just gone back to work & all of your old clients are back in PA. If that customer is happy with your work, they will spread your name.

You might want to try getting a unique business card made...that will stand out from the rest. Then put them on any cork board that you see that is available for business cards. Hand them out to everyone that you meet. Give a "free" haircut every now and then (especially if they like the cut)...and just ask them if they would refer at least three friends to you. Then give them three business cards that say......"I am a friend of.........."(and enter their name in the blank) IF your generosity comes back...you will have three more clients. If it doesn't....just keep on trying. Like the former poster stated...."word of mouth...is your best advertisement". Those that are happy with "your work" will come back.
Good Luck in your venture....and a belated "Welcome" to Charlotte.

Its seems funny that you ask for any ideas about building up some customers. Im looking for a barber that gives the turkish ear hair removal. I hear that it makes your ears feel great and you really get that just went to the barber shop feeling. I bet alot of people would like to try this. 100 times better than trying to trim that tale tale ear hair with some sharp scissors...

Find a chair to work in an already well established shop. Put your time in there, then break off once you have a nice sized group of regulars. Just don't burn any bridges. Bad blood ruins business quick.

I think the HeadShop on Monroe rd. still has an open seat. Call down and ask for Waters, tell him you're interested in filling any open chair time. You'll pay for the chair by the month or by the week. Not sure how much.

Not sure it helps the original guy here, but I think there's a market here for a "real" barber shop...the old timey kind. I'd love to have one near the University area. All that I can find throughout the city when I search for a barber shop are black ones...the kind where a white guy walking in would stop the music, scissors would fall to the floor, and everyone would go silent.

I'd much rather give my $15 (+tip) to a true barber.

Thanks everyone for your ideas, keep them coming. It is hard to spread the word when you don't have any family or not that many friends to spread the word. I've been doing business cards and even giving out free haircuts. I shouldn't complain, I think I'm doing ok but i would like to busier.
