We have a lot of newcomers to the region who may not be aware of the wonderful tree farms we have in this state. You can have a terrific family outing by heading to one of the tree farms, choosing and cutting your own tree!
It is very common to see cars heading down 321, 421 and I-40 with christmas trees strapped to the roof. That's because these families took advantage of one of the traditions of this region - choosing and cutting your Christmas tree.
There are many tree farms all over the state. I have been to several over the years. I made a list of some in different areas and thought this might be good info to share with everyone on our forum.
You can make a weekend out of your treasure hunt or you can do it in a day trip. Regardless, it is a great way to get the family out of the house and in the Holiday spirit!

Thanks for the link, Ani. I saved a section of yesterday's paper for this very reason: every year for the past 8 years we've gone as a family to cut down a Christmas tree, mostly in Wisconsin, although there was one place in Illinois we liked best (it was pretty far tho).

I am so glad you can continue the tradition here! I listed one of the tree farms that encourages dogs on leashes, which is especially nice for families that want to get out w/ Fido on their daytrip.
I used to go to a tree farm every year and it soon grew into several neighbors planning the trip with us–we would "caravan" up and down the mountain, kids in tow. We would plan where to stop for lunch (with that many kids - this does need to be planned!) and we would also plan what other shopping we would do along the way, as there are many places to get unique gifts. For example, if you are heading to Boone, it is fun to stop by Blowing Rock and buy pottery b/f you head back to Charlotte.
There were times we got up early and stayed til after dark, so we could enjoy the lights at Chetola. You can make a big circle there around the lake and the kids love it! The guards will let you in if you tell them you are coming to see the light display.

We went here on Friday. They did not have the best selection but what a nice experience. They have a bonfire, hayride, free hot chocolate, you get to roast marshmellows by their fire. And the prices are great too. If you are not looking for a 8' foot big tree I would suggest this farm.
