I have not done anything different at all. In fact, I think I've used less and my power bill went from $42 to $92 in one month. It's not that hot that I would be using my a/c that hard. Anyone else have this same situation??

My bill went up several months back. The reason it went up is b/c it shows that we are consuming more KW hours per day. We have been quite perplexed as nothing changed. Then it suddenly lowered in June. Very odd but we have checked our meter and can't figure out what could possibly have made it spike for several months, when we were not even using heat or cooling much at all. We have never figured out what occurred.

I just checked my bill last night. I saved 40% YOY from '08 over '07 due to trying really hard to conserve energy (raise a/c a little, change to cfl's, etc...)

I also am on track to use 10% less than last year. The wife and I are Just making sure we don't waste energy....too darn expensive...

RATES have gone up slightly, however you must be consuming more and just not realize it. Your Duke bill shows percetage breakouts (ie lighting, cooling) where you could be using more energy and not realizing....hope this helps

We have a flat rate of 102 dollars every month. I'm really paranoid that we are going to get slammed with a huge bill at the end of the year. They say we "could" get a refund, but I like the snowballs chance in h-e-double hockey sticks better than our refunds chance.

Don't be paranoid. Just check your recent past history and you can gauge whether your EPP will go up or down.......

Our most recent bill that ended 7/16/09 was for $171.53. We used 72 fewer KWH than the 7/17/08 bill which was for 171.96. Both were for 33 days. It comes to about 5.20 a day for electric. Wonder what it will be with Cap and Tax. We have a 3,000 sq. ft. house with an open floor plan. We keep the downstairs at 75 during the day and 73 in the evening and 71 at bed time. Upstairs is usually at 77 day, 75 eve and 72, 73 at night.

Ours went up a huge amount too. Nothing has changed - in fact we thought we were saving electricity but obviously not. It was a bit shock.

Well, I decided to check my bills which go back to 7/7 of '08 and '09. For this year I used 1183kwh @ a cost of $113 vs. 1464kwh @ a cost of $137 for '08. Like CouponJack, I've replaced most of the old light bulbs with CFLs which must save a bit. I also followed some sage advice from my NC native friend who said to keep the house at a constant 77 or 78 degrees. "You want to remove the humidity, but not turn your house into an icebox". I also open the windows at night and turn off the sytem, if the outside temperature is 70 or below, regardless of the humidity level - I like getting some fresh air in the house during the night, whenever possible. Wearing shorts 8 months of the year also helps keep you cool!

I held on to some of my old PSE&G bills from when I lived in NJ and discovered that electricity is much cheaper in NC than there. Even now the cost is about 3 cents a kilowatt cheaper. I still feel sorry for all the people who came from Long Island and had LILCO and its descendant company LIPA. Their rates are more than double of what we pay here!
