Stick to your principles! I sure do when it comes to this stuff. I have never lost yet. Believe me, once you get the CEO involved - things will move along. He will just hand it off to the right person and it will be taken care of. Don't be surprised if you get a personal phone call (from someone) telling you how sorry he/she is that you have had to deal with this situation.
ani - I'll be making a few phone calls tomorrow! We'll see what happens!

Emissary, everyone I know in South Jersey did it that way. By signing over the insurance company's check to the doctor, you prove that that's what the inurance company gave you & they don't have your bank account number on your check (maybe everybody I know who did this was paranoid)
Just photocopy both sides after you sign it over to them.

SB - That's really good info! I never "thought" about the bank account number! "You cheeky little monkey, you" as Craig Ferguson would say!

ROFL, like I said, Emissary, maybe I just know a lot of paranoid people. I have my own medical billing horror story, but I'm not going to post it.
I could be wrong, but I'd endorse the check & pay that portion of the bill, then follow Ani's instructions. Hopefully, they'll just be happy to get paid.

Well, if things don't go well, I'll be making some new posts on the Toronto or Montreal C-D forum! At least I won't have to worry about a bill! But it's sooo...cold. I moved to get away from that! Maybe on my next hospital visit, I'll disguise myself as an "illegal alien"! Scr+u the system!

Emissary, I'm afraid that the US medical system is just a nightmare.
So what if I need to take my wife to the ER today? What should I do or ask to make sure this does not happen?
I think at this point it is important to remind people, the doctor this happened with WAS NOT the ER doctor - this was a doctor who followed up with Em on the second day in the hospital. I feel sure ER doctors seeing you would be covered by your insurance.

Hmmmm...another complication. From what I understand, if you are admitted after a visit to the ER, the ER co-pay is waived and that all charges will be folded into/carried into the bill during the inpatient stay. Simply put, there is a portion of the bill (facility & physician) that is in-network and then here's the problem part with a non-resident out-of-network physician as attending on the second day.
A big question is weather or not someone else heard them tell you that you would be covered? Then it goes from your word against theirs, to someone at the hospital messed up then it is the hospitals problem and not yours. Then if they continue to push it then you can take it to court.
