I get my haircut at Raeford's in downtown Davidson (across from CVS). I've seen other fellows get a full lather shave there. Haven't done that yet myself. I just get the brief shave around the ears and neck with a regular haircut.
Anyone know of any decent barber shops where a guy can get a hot lather shave?
My dad is an "old school" barber in Pittsburgh. Actually alot of barbers have gotten away from hot lather shaves due to health concerns, bloodborne pathogens, etc. I think you may have a tough time find a barber that will do this. My dad has cut hair for 62 years now, he used to use a straight razor, he had a lather machine and he used a strop to sharpen the razors. He's 83 now...and he still cuts hair, he just sticks to his clippers and scissors.

They're still out there but they charge an arm and a leg. I always thought it was mainly due to it being some sort of "luxury" experience but I guess the maintenance/insurance costs may be higher.
Frankly, I don't see the appeal. I think the service is antiquated given the easy availability of quality razors.
Roosters does the hot lather shave, and I was intrigued by this since I hadn't had it done before. So, I asked about it when I was getting my haircut there. They use a disposable safty razor, not a straight razor. Some hot shaving cream doesn't make up for being shaved with a disposable. Especially for what they charge for it. I can't EVER see paying for that.
And I bet he can tell some good stories. God bless him
You just dont know...he truly is a character. He used to talk so much in the barber shop that he would come home and wouldnt want to talk to any of us. He said "I talked all day and I dont want to talk anymore". Plus, he would drag his "barbershop jokes" home with him and unload them on my mom. They used to call his shop "gestapo headquarters" because lots of deals were made there.
Yeah, what happens at the barber shop stays at the barber shop!!! Did your dad have the red and white poles on his shop?
