We're considering building in Mooresville and love the designs of Schumacher Homes, but I've read a lot of concerning reviews of that company online. Most of the reviews are for divisions of their company in different areas of the country, however. Just wondering if anyone has built with them in the Charlotte area and if so, what that experience was like. Also, same thing with True Homes. The reviews w/True Homes seem to be less severe than the ones I've read re: Schumacher, but still. I know that any home building experience will have its issues, but it's hard to feel confident going into something so big after reading 45+ complaints on the BBB. I'd appreciate any insight you all can provide! Thanks!
IMHO, I can't get past the poor aesthetics of True Homes. Everything is subjective, so drive through a True Homes subdivision and judge for yourself.
A friend recently built with Schumacher and he said they did a pretty good job... until the closing. Once the money changed hands, my friend had a hard time getting the builder back to finish the tic-tac items that need repair, adjustment, etc. But he was generally happy with the overall experience with Schumacher.
We're building a house now and I was interested in Schumacher, but we experienced the classic case of their saleswoman judging us on our appearance, not by our situation. I stopped in the "old" Mooresville location one rainy Saturday afternoon just to check their place out. I had been doing yardwork and remembered that I had to get there while they were still open that day.
The saleswoman politely spoke to me and answered a couple of questions, but she sure wanted to be doing anything else (or so it seemed). Anyway, she gave me some rather general information and basically told me to check back "when I was ready". Didn't ask for my name or phone number to follow up or anything. Wow, that was off-putting. So, we scratched them off our list right then.
Every county has a homebuilder association. Visit their website and study some custom builders. They don't just create ornate lakeside homes, some also build regular Joe houses in between to keep their crews busy. Pick your own lot, your own builder, your own plan.
Thanks for the responses, everyone! Very helpful. The True Homes neighborhood we looked at was actually quite nice. The homes are in the $400k-$550k range, though, so that probably helps. We still haven't decided if we want to build, but I appreciate the insight!
