I will be moving in January to the University City area north of 85. Looking for 1 Bdrm, quiet, safe complex for around $700.

Try the Thornberry or highland . They are both on Mallard Creek church road betewen 85 and North Tryon. I would recommend Berkely Place, however I'm recently having problems with them and a noisy neighbor. Management has no back bone. Until this neighbor moved in I had No problems there, and I lived there almost 2 years.

Do not go anywhere near Sugar Creek Rd (near I-85) or Tryon St. (South of Harris Blvd). Would pretty much stay on Harris Blvd (west of Tryon St) or Mallard Creek Church Rd (also west of Tryon St). Yuo should be able to find a nice 1 bedroom for $700. Try the "Highlands" on Mallard Creek Church Rd (between Tryon St & I-85). They are gated and you may even be able to get one with an attached garage with direct access into your apartment. They were built in 2001 and are nice.

Very good advice, I often give the same info to newcomers

Tryon Street north of Harris is not bad at all. I might recommend Walden Court Apartments. I think a 1BD runs about 550/month. It's an older complex, but I lived there for 2 1/2 years and never had a problem. It's also an easy walk to the Bloom grocery store, bars and restaurants around the lake.

Walden Court is nice. But if you can spend up to $700, I would suggest a gated community. Charlotte has over almost 8,000 cars a day stolen just in Mecklenburg County. It is just a little extra piece of mind, especially if you can get a garage to (attached to your apartment with direct access). Good luck though!

Though I appreciate the thought that Gated communities may be safer, but its preception only. Garages do help. I am not aware of Charlotte being any different than other big cities for car thefts. Again all depends on what you want to be close to. The other side of 85 is even a bit better, but you also go up in cost. You aren't going to get a decent apt with garage for $700.

you're right about gated communities. it only benefits criminals. for us who live in gated communities its just an annoyance that we have to deal with everytime we come home or a friend comes to visit and we have to go let them in. anyone can just wait and follow someone in if they want to.

as for the 700 dollar range, the apts where I live for 1 bdrms are going from 600-680 right now and they're the best apartments I found in all of the university area. the staff is also really nice, in fact one of the girls lives in the apt next to me which shows just how safe and good it is to live here since she barely gets a discount on her rent. a garage I think is not too expensive maybe 50-60 a month so you can still be under 700 a month w/ garage and have a 1000 sq ft bedroom apt thats beautiful by the way. The one that is 680 a month is actually 2 bedroom since the den has its own walk in closet and is the size of a normal (not master) bedroom. We got ours in may and pay 840 a month and they're now offering it for 682 a month. kinda shi*ty, I wish i hadnt moved until now! haha
