donx, we rent a small house in different locations when we visit. We have stayed in places in Mooresville and Huntersville and from there explore different areas around the lake. We go when its off season so rentals are pretty cheap and we cook in some nights to off set costs although I have to admit, we like trying the different restuarants around the lake. It also gives us the opportunity to talk with others when we go out for dinner. I'd suggest getting a map of the area, look at some housing on the net, and then check out the places you are interested in. You will find as you drive around all kinds of developments in all price ranges.
We just got back from our latest trip down and noticed that there is much more building going on than the last few years of the slump. If you see a subdivision you are interested in I would suggest you do some research before buying. There are some developments that were started, have roads in, and a few houses, but the developer went bankrupt., which means those few houses that were built will have to pay to maintain the roads and whatever other infrastructures are there. You also should check the covenants of the home owners associations to make sure you can live with the rules that are in place.
On one of our trips down we had met with a financial advisor in Lk. Norman to get a clearer picture of the different costs between NJ and NC and specifically some of the towns we were interested in. Because of the tax structure some towns are more expensive to live in than others. We found that Cornelious and Lincoln have higher taxes but then again, seem to have more services such as gas, city water and sewer as opposed to septic and wells in other areas.
Basically just figure out what is important to you to have in a property and go from there. Hope that helps.
