My husband and I are really considering relocating from VA to Charlotte. We currently live in a large town in VA that is located right between Richmond and DC so we are very used to having everything close by. We have an 8-month old little boy. I am a social worker and my husband works in the medical field (he will have the option of transferring his position to NC). I was wondering if anyone can help provide me with some info/suggestions about the area. My husband lived there briefly a few years ago and loved it but I'm not too familiar with is yet. We are ready for a change
Any suggestions on great Real estate agents/agencies who can show us around? We are hoping to rent a home for a bit prior to purchasing. We're looking for an affordable area in Charlotte that has GREAT public schools, close to shopping and grocery stores, nice neighborhoods, and family friendly. Thanks!
Hi! The main HQ of the company that he works for would be right in the heart of Charlotte so I believe downtown? He may be assigned to work at different medical offices around the area, so we want to stay in closer proximity to the city but would most likely need to be in the outskirts due to budget. Since we plan on renting a single family home/town home, we're hoping to say within a max of $1,200/month. Let me know if you think this is unrealistic--we're open to any and all ideas/suggestions.
Take a look in the Concord area (Exit 52 off I85). He might have a 25-30 minute commute in the morning and more in the afternoon depending on where he needed to go in downtown Charlotte. My husband commuted down near BOA Stadium and it wasn't to bad. There are homes to rent around and you should be able to find something in your price range. The school system is great (it's Cabarrus County). You should be able to find everything you need around here. You could look in Moss Creek, Cannon Crossing, Skybrook North, Highland Creek (make sure to stay on the Cabarrus side) just to name a few neighborhoods. The ES for the Meck side is really good but the middle school is not). If you need a daycare for your son I also have a great recommendation. My kids are 4.5 & 5 (soon to be 6) and they both attended this daycare/preschool and it's worth every penny.
This sounds great! My husband actually mentioned the Concord and Matthews areas but after looking into it some more, the Concord area seems like a great place. A 25-30 minute commute doesn't seem bad at all, considering some of his current commute is to Northern Virginia which is a nightmare! We will explore the area much further. I plan on working full-time still once we move, but would love to work part-time if our budget permits. Either way, I will definitely need recommendations for wonderful childcare.

It might be more depending on what time he would need to leave in the morning as far as commute time it could go up to 45 minutes to an hour but nothing like the DC area. I couldn't imagine a commute from where you live to the DC area. Yikes!
We love the Concord area (we are on the Cabarrus/Meck line). If you all end up in this area let me know and I would be happy to pass along the childcare recommendation!

Sorry to barge in here, but I am curious about the Cabarrus/Meck line. There is a development that we are interested in, Waterford, but I am shying away from it because what I have seen online regarding the school ratings vs. Davidson. But I keep hearing great Cabarrus schools- am I missing something? Thanks for your help and sorry for the barge

I'm not sure where Waterford goes whether it's Odell or Boger (the boundaries were changed for Odell this school year and one neighborhood right near Waterford was changed from Odell to Boger). Both schools are really good and there is a lot of parent participation. My son currently goes to the new Charter school for K but we will most likely switch him to our home public school which is Cox Mill. Odell,Boger and Cox Mill always come highly rated.
