As I mentioned in another thread, my homeowners insurance is going up 25%. I got a letter warning me that the rate would be 9% higher than that set by NCRB which requires written consent of a policy holder.
I had a roof claim in 2011 but was pretty sure that wasn't it. I called my agent today. They are not doing this statewide but they are doing it to everyone in Mecklenburg. Not Union though. Maybe they don't have as many people canvassing neighborhoods after storms to find bad roofs (I know mine was bad because State Farm sent someone out to take a close look).
While it might be tempting to shop around, a quick look at USAA showed a higher rate. Apparently Nationwide has been doing this for a couple of years.
Another reason to move to Monroe? Maybe. But even at 25% increase, it's only $12 per month.
Living in a neighborhood that got zapped in the down direction with the 2011 reval, the insurance replacement estimate 220% my assessed value!
I highly recommend looking at this list of home claim satisfaction rankings from JD Power. Other than USAA (almost always ranked top 3 insurance companies) not one of the other three companies mentioned above finished anywhere near the top of the list.
In order to get to almost all of the top companies, you will need to contact an independent agent who represents that particular company. Each company's website will help you find a local agent and many will represent multiple top rated companies.
I received the same letter/waiver about my rate being above the
NC allowable.n I have never had a claim. I'm thinking about USAA for all of my insurance needs.

I find it slightly bazaar that you mention top ranked firms but then recommend an independent agent. Are you one?
Another good source for insurance review is the June issue of Consumer Reports. USAA and Amica do very well there too. Amica is doing extremely well considering their relatively low profile.
I renewed my insurance in December and it increased over 25%, but I didn't get one of those letters. I'm hoping this started happening before then and I hopefully don't have to expect another 25% increase next year?
Not an agent, I take pride in fully understanding things I pay a premium for. I had a bad experience on an auto accident in the past and vowed to never get screwed over like that again. Therefore I'd much rather be insured by a company who has a reputation for being there when a claim happens even if it means I pay a little more.

I've had really good service with State Farm regardless of the fact they sued me once. For that I had them by the roof.
