With today's announcement, UNCC becomes the only University in NC, and in the UNC system with a mass transit light rail station right on its campus. This school is often criticized as being too suburban, especially by it's better known peers in eastern NC, but now it will be a destination on Charlotte's 2nd light rail line.
No other University in the Carolinas can make this claim and I should imagine, very few in the South as well.
To me it seems horribly, extremely expensive. It's like $1.2 billion for 9+ miles. What is the expected ridership? I would like to work out the cost per rider per mile. It might be cheaper to transport everyone by taxi.

Wait a second. CPCC, Johnson and Wales, and JCSU could all have streetcar stops before UNCC gets light rail (if the mayor has his way).

If $1.2 billion will bring over $1 billion of urban development to North Tryon (think Southend) then it's money well spent. Trust me, light rail is NOT all about moving people. Even the founder of Charlotte's light rail efforts (Pay McCrory) admits that.
The ridership will be HUGE. Not just UNCC students, but, the thousands of people that live in the northern end of NC and work downtown.
Plus, whenever there are festivals, etc., people will be lots more prone to using public transport than trying to find parking downtown...
Great move!! Just waiting patiently.
I agree, coming from Huntersville to go Uptown we use the Scaley Bark or Tyvola station this could be a plus if they finish 485 by then. lol I have lost hope.

I hope so. That will make my commute between Concord and Uptown faster. I do not see using the light rail myself. Why turn a 30 minute drive into an hour long commute?

Not many universities in any state that can claim to have a light rail station right n campus.
