We are moving to Charlotte in the spring and right now need family/individual coverage. (We are not employed.) What is the best? BCBS, United, Humana or Coventry?

also, it looks like maternity coverage is not standard to the plans, which seems weird to me. What do people do for maternity coverage? (We are coming from NYC and all insurance plans cover maternity.)
thanks!

All I can tell you is I've been pleased with my Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC coverage.

My plan has a $3000 deductible, but once that was met they have paid for every appt, procedure and Rx I've gotten since without any co-pays.

I would seriously look into using an HSA plan to fund maternity expenses. A BCBS maternity rider will cost you $200.00+ each month and have deductibles/limited coverage.

With an HSA you can sock away 8,000 to 10,000 in a bank account all while deducting those expenses 100% or pre-tax if you get a paycheck.

Only group insurance plans in NC include maternity... I also don't think that Humana or United offer seperate maternity plans, only BCBS.

thanks this is helpful. I will look into a HSA account. I wonder why they don't cover maternity? Seems like a no brainer to me!

Do you have any opinions on one company vs. the other?

Just the way it is in NC. Individual policies don't cover maternity, which makes them cheaper than states that do.

Carriers?

You can't go wrong with BCBS, Coventry/Wellpath, United All have pretty good reputations in NC. BCBS has the loosest underwriting and will take on people who are overweight/obese for their height. Coventry and United are more selective.

I'm not overweight for my height. I'm short for my weight.

Me too! I think my deductible is $2500, but the deductible is for HOSPITAL visits. I have had all kinds of in-office procedures where a $30 specialist co-pay applied, including skin surgery and colonoscopy.

One thing you need to be sure of is exactly in which state you are going to be residing. Charlotte, of course, is right on the NC/SC border and many people who work in NC reside in SC and vice-versa. The reason I mention this is because it makes a difference as to which one you apply to. I live 5 miles into SC but I am not allowed to apply to BCBS NC. I have to use BCBS SC which is a lot more picky on their underwriting. Pricing is also apparently different between the states. This is only for individual policies. If someone is getting their insurance through work, then it is based on the work's location.

We are in the process of looking as well because my COBRA is running out the end of the year. Unfortunately, seeing that we are both over 60 and my hubby has a minor pre-existing condition we are having problems finding something affordable. If we were in NC their PCIP is cheaper and better than SC. But alas we are in SC.

BCBS of NC is the only health insurance you can get with maternity coverage in NC. In SC, you cannot buy individual/family maternity plans. That makes your choice pretty easy. That said, it is the plan we have, after researching and contacting a broker and realizing it was our only option. We are paying a lot for this upcoming baby!
