Whiteville, NC (Charlotte: low crime, schools, live in)

I'm trying to get information on Whiteville, NC and the surrounding area. I currently live in the Charlotte area (originally from Pennsylvania), but a job offer has come up that means a move. Can anyone tell me which towns to look at for decent schools and a low crime rate? Is it a good area to raise a family? I have one child who would require special needs services at school. Any help would be appreciated.
