Restaurants are not consider retail jobs in the employment report. See my comment on page 2 of this thread for a link to how jobs are classified.

The discussion is not about the "classification" of jobs but the number of establishments ( no matter the nature) either opening or closing.

Just like with these forums I guess it all depends who's "reporting" the info... I'm in the area all the time, are you seeing these negative things yourself or just hearing about it in general?
