I just read a poster on another forum who said that her chickens eat the baby snakes in her yard. I understand about the snakes being everywhere, but where in Mecklenburg County do people have chickens? She said she is in "southeast Charlotte" but maybe she's in Union County?

The neighbor behind me (in SE Charlotte) has chickens, but his are in a coop, most of the time.

Though it's not real common, some people in the city limits of Charlotte do have a few chickens in their yards for the eggs. There is an ordinance that allows this to accomadate people who like to raise their own food

I learned a lot on this thread last year: https://www.city-data.com/forum/charl...rdinances.html

I have friends in Plaza-Midwood, Oakdale and the Derita area that have chickens. Now I can't eat store-bought eggs, because the fresh ones are so much better!

Be aware, though, that chickens draw their own predators. Raccoons, wolves, bobcats all LOVE chickens. Actually, so do many of the larger breed dogs. My son once lost 17 chickens to a rampage by his neighbour's chow mix.

They do a great job at pest removal as well as supply you with eggs. You do not have to have a rooster to have eggs. But, you really have to keep an eye on them.

I looked into it but my HOA doesn't allow them much to my disappointment. I buy them from the farmer's market. And they are delicious! Super hard shell, very flavorful egg, all you need is barely a pinch of salt and pepper.

I also heard in addition to baby snakes, they are great for bug control.
