Question for the board. I was looking at some of the developments in the Eastfield Rd. area of Huntersville (going towards Concord). I was advised by a friend to ask around to see if there have been any complaints about “terrible smells” by residents, before buying in that area. The Wallace Farms manure plant is in that area and I understand some residents in some of the communities near there hate living in that area because they can smell the plant often. Anyone have any knowledge of this; any particular developments to shy away from, anyone worse than others? I’m sure if I asked a seller directly, they wouldn’t give me a straight answer. Thanks.

Hi there I acutally live in a development right near Wallace's farm. When I moved into this neighborhood, I did the research and found out there was a plant right behind us. The odor really doesn't bother me but I'm from No. Va (before it was taken over by Northeners) where there used to be cow farms all over. The odor is worst in the evenings as the sun goes down. It's gotten better since all the complaints it's received from all the developments. In my opinion, this farm was there first and the orginal Wallace owned all this land. If people are so worried about the odor, they should have moved elsewhere. I have not and will not sign any petition to run this family out. I will tell you that the land where Skybrook (half a million dollar homes) is used to be a landfill so I wouldn't recommending purchasing one of those overpriced homes. Good luck!

Thanks for the response. I've been doing some asking around and I'm getting responses very similar to yours. Most people I've talked to said, for the most part, its not a problem, so I'm definitely going to keep looking in that area.

I live very close to there and have not had or have heard of anyone with these problems.

I just moved into Hidden Meadows in Highland Creek and I just about throw up some days when I go outside. I was told the smell is not bad before I moved but I find it is much worse than I was told. I love the neighborhood and my home but I need some relief from this odor.

We have a few friends that live in Skybrook, and the odor is definitely a concern for them. Whether it would have been an issue in their decisions to buy (had they known), I can't say.

We looked in Highland Creek and were advised by our real estate agent about the 'way the wind blows' problem we would experience.

Then its the Wallace's greedy fault for selling their land to developers.

google satellite maps or other map programs can be good source of starting a lead to find out what structures are around a prospective area that you may move into.
wallace farms, loc: Huntersville, NC - Google Maps

I remember last fall a city data member wanted to know what the round domes that was near Wynfield Forest development was so I decided to be nosey and investigate and it ended up being a water treatment plant.

If anyone finds some odd structure or patterns in the land around your home you can always post it on this site and someone might be able to answer.

I was considering looking in the Skybrook development and drove out there 2 nights ago to check the neighborhood out. The smell of the manure plant was so overpowering, at least to me on that night, that I could barely breathe. I don't know if it was a particularly bad night or what, but I called my family and told them that was definitely not the place for me. Just my two cents' but it would definitely be a factor in me not being there (note I am not suggesting they stop operating their family business ... just not a place where I want to invest several hundreds of thousands of dollars into, not to mention the location of my home)
