The spouse discovered she is extremely claustrophobic while trying to get an MRI. She needs this MRI, but under no circumstances will she get back into one of those MRI machines ever again. I can't even bribe her with promises of a long weekend trip to Vegas. There is an option of putting her out completely for the test. Can anyone recommend an open MRI (has to be open on all four sides, except machine above) within a 50 mile radius of Charlotte? Thanks all.

Jim, I don't know where she went, but I can help you eliminate one. Shelby's MRI is a tube, open on both ends, but not completely open like what you're looking for.

(Actually, when I had my MRI done, I discovered that that crap that they make you drink can make you even sicker than you started out).

Go under sedation and get the MRI from a regular one. Contrast is much better.

Thanks for the input. No 295, she didn't have to drink anything. She is so scared of this procedure now that either it would have to be completely open or she would have to be completely sedated. She said it felt like she was being smothered.

Jim, I'll be honest, when I had mine done, I had had major surgery then got a very bad complication. I was on heavy duty pain meds, & just remember bits & pieces, including the fact that it was a tube & the techs were very nice. Maybe just something to take the edge off might work. Have you discussed it with a doctor? I'm not an MD, but considering that I can be a touch clausterphobic at times I'm thinking that there might be a midground. (a "happy pill")

I am like your wife - I will NEVER get in one of those tubes again. I've even made my husband swear he won't agree to it even if I'm in a coma (many people in coma's are more aware of their surroundings than we may realize!)
