I have a brother that lives down river from me but it's actually north on the highway. When I visit, I'm either driving my car up the road or paddling my john boat down to his house....
When I say I am going to Hurricane - I usually say "Hurricane uh Hurricun" cuz I still can't figure out what the locals consider is "proper".
Drive me crazy when I hear a radio ad/announcer, etc say Ka na wha county - definite clue they do NOT live in the area.
My theory is - you pronounce things like the locals say it should be pronounced.
I'm pretty sure everyone has an aversion to burglaries and muggings in Charleston and surrounding areas.
You wouldn't poke fun at me if you've actually been burgled and mugged as many times as I have.
Anyhow, thanks to all for the helpful info. I'm still looking around the area on weekends and getting more familiar.
Special thanks to RedOchre for the tip.
No, Vec, not burgled and mugged in N WV;
in cities like LA, Denver and various army bases around the world, over a long period of time. They do have a fair amount going on in Motown, and even fairmont, actually. Not enough to keep me up nights, but noteworthy still. Neighbor's car was broken into a few weeks back, near FSU.
