My husband and I are considering a move from Chicago to Charleston and I'm having trouble finding housing on the web. Can anyone recommend an apartment building for our first year in the city? We want to be as close to the capital as possible, in a safe neigborhood and are willing to pay more for luxury apartments. Please send any contact info you might have for these builidings since the web does not have good listings for Charleston.

One building that was recommended, 1210 Quarrier Street, does not have any contact info on the web.

Any help would be appreciated!

You should also be aware that in places like Chicago and where I now live, Atlanta, that's it's commonplace to see elaborate apartment complexes with pools, tennis courts, and other ammenities. Actual communities of apartments. It's the norm in many medium to larger sized cities - it's NOT the norm in Charleston.

I grew up in Chas., and there were never any complexes other than the older classic apartment buildings. There are a couple here and there now in the burbs, but pretty much most are still the older stone mid-rise buildings near downtown or one or two in Kanawha City across the river from Charleston.

There WAS a nicer complex right across the street from "Charleston Town Center" mall downtown - brick town house units. I could not find them on Google, but they looked very upper-end compared to what you usually see in the area and the location is excellent. They may have gone condo by now though - I would suggest you contact a realtor there who can at least steer you toward a rental agency that might have more info.

It is always wise to check neighborhood safety by contacting the local police. Having said that, you might look into apartment availability at #1 Morris Street. I lived there for 3 years, and it was great. My work took me away for a lot of years, and though I now live near family, I have need to go to Morris Street and vicinity frequently, and it still looks great. I will be checking on the availability of an efficiency apartment, as I had there before, back when the tenants were known as "The One Morris Family".

Good luck.
Jerry
