A friend of mine may be moving down to Charleston and is considering The Island Apartments on James Island to rent for a year or so while they find the right place to buy. Can anyone share local wisdom with me about the area (safe?) or apartment community? Thanks!

That is a safe area. It's close to the beach and close to downtown. It's townhomes is a fairly newly development area and sits right next to another group of townhomes called Meridian Place.

I am not familiar with that area, but with any area in the Charleston region, I'd always check the Sex Offender database before signing a lease or any other dotted line. The Charleston is loaded with sex offenders.

Sex Offender Registry

I'd probably also call the local police department to see if there have been crime problems in the area. The Charleston police department publishes crime info on Crimeweb: CrimeWeb.net - Home

The Islands is in a decent area. The management tries hard. The apartments are updated for what it is worth......cheap paint, cheaper carpeting and cheap fixes. The biggest problem is excrement from all the dogs. The best thing is that it is quiet.
