Hey everyone! I've applied for a job and if I do get it my salary will be in the $41-45,000 range. Is this affordable for the area of Charleston or nearby areas? The job requires that I reside in this area.

P.S. I don't currently live in South Carolina but I will be relocating if I get this job.

Also I've been looking at various apartment complexes that I may check out.

Atlantic Palms Apts
Northwoods Townhomes
Ashley Grove
Devon Pointe

Any opinions on these apartments? Any suggestions or useful links? Thank You!

How far to work? Car vs. Public Transportation? Health insurance need? Need for TV/Cable/Internet? Single/Married/Child? All important things to consider.

Here's a go-to guide for WA complexes: https://www.city-data.com/forum/charl...s-mom-son.html

I would stay away from Ashley Grove. We looked there and weren't impressed. Didn't like it. I haven't heard of the others.

I would recommend (in West Ashley)... Shadowmoss Pointe, Colonial Village at Westchase (actually there are several colonial village properties, real nice), Bolton's Landing is pretty good. There are several nice complexes off Glenn McConnell Blvd that would work too. Look at West Ashley outside 526, has the nicer apartments .

The job provides a vehicle. I'm a single mom...divorced actually. However it will just be me for a while until I get everything situated. Then I will send for my four year old. I will possibly send for him in the summer of next year so he can start at an elementary school. I do think that internet and tv are necessities. I can live without cable. Perhaps I'll try out netflix. The job pays semi monthly. I also receive child support for my child. I'm looking into the health insurance.

Life, Dental, and Basic Long Term Disablility are provided at no costs for me as the employee. It's just a bit more if i want to have my son on the insurance as well.

$40ishK a year, car and car insurance provided, one child, some additional income such as child support is doable in this area. Not in an upsacle place like MTP, but a liveable wage especially out around Summerville, Ladson, away from the coast/beaches/downtown.

Wish you the best.

My son ended up at Sabal Palms - is very happy there. Someone linked my thread when we were first looking for something for him. There are a few things places we didn't go to. I also did a thread for apartments in Mt Pleasant that we looked at entitled similarly. We actually didn't look at any of the places you listed, but honestly, if we didn't look at them, there was a reason - I researched the heck out of apartment complexes before we made out scouting trips there. I might have missed one or 2 that would have been acceptable to mom (me). You should be able to get a 1 br in Sabal Palms for $800-900 (maybe, I haven't checked rents since he moved there last May) - 2 br for $900 to $100ish. Someone mentioned Bolton's Landing above - they are nearly identical floorplans as Sabal Palms - more upscale with granite and more more and nicer amenities. But crazy high speed bumps (makes a big difference depending on the kind of car you drive) and had a more apartment feel to them with the buildings all in a row and lots of parking lot. Lots of kids though.

Looks at the thread link mentioned above.
