My family is looking to relocate from PA to Charleston area. I have 3 kids and they all play soccer. My oldest son (9 years old) plays for a premier team in PA. We hate to move him away from his teammate but hope to find some good soccer teams near Charleston for him to tryout for. I'm looking for a program is that all about player developement. Can anyone comment on some of the programs and teams around there? Thank you.
I love soccer, played it nearly my entire life. I have to get back into it onto an adult league shortly. My last involvement was coaching an Under 8 team for Charleston County Rec. Had a great time doing so. I think one of your best resources will likely be here Lowcountry Soccer LLC . Check with them, they should be able to put you in touch with all of the local programs and teams, as well as the travelling teams and events they sponsor in the lowcountry for youth soccer. That should be a great place to start for your kids. Let me know if there's anything else I can do. Charleston Battery also holds camps yearly for children. Certainly worth checking into. http://www.charlestonbattery.com/youth_academy.asp
Mt. Pleasant has a program with SC United, which has teams across the state. There's also youth soccer in all the communities around here, but this sounds more like what you're looking for if your 9 year old plays for a premier team in Pa...

We followed your advice and received a return call from one the entities you recommend. We recorded the call and you will understand why. The business owner was condescending, aggressive, and mean spirited in specifying the segregation of youth soccer clubs, the alleged exclusivity, elitism and the overly expensive registration of a certain club, and belittling young people and their parents who encourage their children to play for fun not competitiveness. Belittling parent volunteer coaching. What was most disturbing was the personal character assault on articulate speech having the business owner daring to actually state and insult a respectful parental inquiry "If you don't mind me saying so you sound like a foreigner who learned English as a second language and speaks too formal". The way a person speaks, their nationality, race, and education have nothing to do with an inquiry about soccer for kids. Apparently burdened by the inquiry we were also met with "I didn't have to give you information, I did so because I'm a nice person" a statement typically boasted by the opposite. Call the clubs directly and inquire. James Island Youth Soccer Club, SC United in Mount Pleasant (described as unwelcoming of recreational child and youth players and only for patents with millions of dollars to spend on soccer), and Charleston Recreation Department (described as if you just want your kid to kick a ball around with untrained parent volunteers). The call was hurtful and managed to be informative. When contacting the clubs directly they were all pleasant and encouraging. So I suggest learn from our experience and contact the clubs and recreation departments directly.
That is horrible, I am so sorry you were treated that way. I never would have expected that from either of those agencies.
