This thread interests me as I may be losing my employer-provided Iphone and will need to get a personal cel phone after that.

I don't want to pay for a data plan.

Is it possible to buy a pay-as-you-go plan and use it with an unlocked smart phone?

I would like to be able to continue to use some of the apps I have on my Iphone, but I don't need much talk time and don't need to check email constantly.

I am turning 13 in November and I still don’t have a phone. My parents said maybe I could get a phone for my birthday. It has to be only text and call no contract and NO WEB AND NO DATA. I can't find a phone like that. I only found a flip. I don’t want a flip I really want a slide. But if I couldn't find one I would go for the keyboard on the screen. I don't want a really expensive phone I want a plan and simple one. Because other than one girl who is really not ready for one she told me herself that she wasn’t because she loses everything. But other than her I am the only girl in the class without a phone. I don’t want to spend 50 dollars a month on a phone. Like I don’t mind paying at least 30 but that is it unless my parents help me out. But please if you have anything to add please say so I really truly want a phone.

You should check which prepaid carriers are in your area.
