Interesting. She also doesn't have the voice and dance talent of Beyonce. Rihanna has the style and edge that young women want to emulate and althought Rihanna is not as good as a singer as Beyonce, her voice is better than Nicole. Also, Beyonce and Rihanna have youth on their side and in the music business, for women, that probably helps.
Rhianna is nowhere near as vocally talented as Nicole. Google some of her nonpop work. I remember hearing her sing the theme from Phantom of the Opera. Rhianna couldn't do that even if she was lip singing
I'm assuming half of you know nothing of this girl dragging her down to the likes of Rihanna. She has more talent in her pinky than Rihanna does in her whole body.
Anyways, I remember hearing Diddy was trying to make her his new hoe and she turned him down. He probably had her blacklisted.
If I was managing her; I'd stick her with adult contemporary and have her image be a little more conservative but sexy. With a voice like hers; she shouldn't be indulging in the pop/bubblegum crap.
She's pretty and can sing, but to me she's never had much of that star type charisma. She's similar to the girl who sings Pretty Girl Rock (Kerry something?) to me... on paper she should work but in practice it's hard to really care about her or even remember her past a certain point.
My best guesses? I think a lot has to do with the production of the artist.
For instance, while Nicole is beautiful and can obviously sing, I can tell you I can't name one of her songs and neither of the videos you played featured catchy, memorable or even hit songs. Besides Dontcha, I can't name another Pussycat Dolls song. They just didn't have big hits.
Rihanna however, does have a distinctive voice and sound you can't even get out of your head. Plus whoever is writing and producing her songs is doing it right. Everything she puts out is hella catchy. She's also changed her look several times, becoming edgier.
Same with Beyonce. When she came out of with first single Work It Out, it was weak and didn't hit. But when Crazy in Love came out, BOOM! Monster hit. Just listen to the production of the song. It was going to be a big hit either way. I think management and music production can go a long way. There are toms of great singers who will never have big hits because their producers create mediocre music or mediocre images.

People seem to forget that Rihanna didn't become a superstar overnight in the music industry. Her success and popularity really didn't start to take off until her 3rd or 4th album.

Personally I think her popularity really took off after the whole thing with Chris Brown. She may have been well known in her genre but that put her on the front page

That is not totally true. Rihanna had worldwide crossover hits on her first 2 albums. Granted her third album was a monster, but she was popular before that. Pon De Replay and S.O.S. put her on the map big time.
