Whats up with the Pee Wee Herman guy? (theater, movies, actor)

I just watched him on Jimmy Kimmel - in Pee Wee Herman character because he now has a new Pee Wee Herman Broadway show.
I guess what I don't get is; he had the big scandal, disappeared for a little while then started doing regular acting gigs.
I saw him as a "regular" actor guy playing some "regular" part in at least a couple of movies.
So he's got a whole lot of other career stuff he can do.......now the heat has finally disappeared and HEEEEEE'S BAaaaCK
Does this guy have a problem? Is Pee Wee some sort of compulsive alter ego that he can't let go of? Does he really want to be Pee Wee the rest of his life? Why resurrect him if not? It was a good time to just make the break and build something different.
The scandal...whatever. But I think this is maybe a little weird.
Um, just had a thought, maybe he's just broke?
I guess Pee Wee is what people know him as, so he'll go back to that. I have seen him in other movies also but I can't even recall his real name. He'll always be Pee Wee to me, I watched his show as a child.
Ummm yeah, nothing to understand: He wouldn't be doing PeeWee unless there was big money in it. I mean acting is his career. Paul Rubens. Love his kid's shows.

in real life he is so opposite pee-wee,but that character is what the public relates to and enjoys
Pee Wee is funny. Pee Wee made Paul rich and famous. No brainer.
