I adopted a stray kitten 8 weeks ago. She is now 13 weeks old. My neighbor had her a week before I took her and my neighbor has a dog and 2 cats. While she was there, she was very close with their dog- slept with it everynight
I know this is ages ago for a little kitten and she does not even remember.
Anyway, my parents just got here from out of state with their 5 month old puppy (She is a Shiranian- Shih Tzu and Pomeranian- so she is pretty small- 7 lbs). My kitten is completely fine around people, but she is not adjusting to another pet. At all. She keeps hissing at the puppy and hiding.

How can I get them used to each other? The puppy is fine with the kitten. Although, she is getting scared of her because of all the hissing going on.

Hissing and hiding for the kitten is normal. All you can do is provide a place for the kitten to go and feel safe. The puppy is naturally going to feel uneasy when the kitten hisses. The kitten feels as if their space is being tread on and will defend it.

As for kitten and puppy getting used to each other? Tough subject, if it's just temporary.

Kittens are not like puppies. You can't just dump them in a room and expect instant friendship.

Well, it is temporary right now. They will be here for a week. But, I go up there for 6 weeks in the summer (I am a teacher) and 2 weeks at Christmas. I plan on taking my kitten. My parents come here 4-5 times a year.
So, they will have to interact throughout their lives

In this case, I'd say just go slow and easy with letting them be in contact. It might be better to keep them separated the majority of the time, except when you can be right with them. LOL, though, is this suggestion even possible?

Just don't expect too much, too soon, and respect the space that each needs. It will work itself out over time, is my thought.

It just takes time. My kitten was around my two dogs since he was 6 weeks old and they watched him like a hawk until they got used to being around each other. When we got our third dog and he met our kitten (Felix) Felix made noises I didn't know a cat could make and hissed and ran. Now they get along just fine. When Felix meets a strange dog it just takes a little time for him to get used to them. Of course I think it helps that Felix thinks he is a dog lol
