Maybe this has been discussed before, if so, sorry. Our one cat, Daisy, has recently begun to watch TV and really gets into it. She will either sit up on the cabinet under it and look up at the screen, her head following the movements, or she lays on the coffee table and watches it intently.

She never did this until about a month ago, not sure why she suddenly has noticed it, but she also jumps up on my computer table and I play cat videos for her. She stares at the screen, and sometimes paws at something that is moving on it.

We think it is the funniest thing, and all the other cats we have ever had were oblivious to the TV, and also when we put them in front of a mirror, they just looked away. I haven't put Daisy in front of a mirror yet, but will try that next.

My mom restricts cat's viewing time to no more than 5 minutes at a time because she thinks it strains his eyes. The cat loves to hop on edge of tv stand and swat at moving things on screen inches from its eyes.

If I put a cat video (birds, squirrels, voles) on the laptop screen, it usually engages my 2 cats. After a couple of minutes, the interest wanes. They actually have a great show just outside the window: the deck has bird feeders and there are always several birds in view.

They have their own live show with the bird seed as mentioned above. I have one who will sometimes sit and watch my computer screen, especially if I am watching a video, even more especially if it one of my own videos of them.

Yeah, I am also concerned about the eye thing. She is right up against the TV, and that concerns me.

My tv is on 24/7 and my cat, as far as I can tell, never pays attention to it. However, I feel that the soft volume of sound and the light keeps her from becoming too bored and lonely when I'm at work. I'd rather have the tv on than for her to be sitting in the silent dark, just waiting for me to get home.

One of our insiders, Punkin aka Pretty Girl, has recently taken up with the television. She just got on the table and started watching one day.

Our eyes process images at a certain rate, and humans process images at a rate of about 45 Hz. So when our TVs show images at 60 Hz, we see that as a continuous image. However, cats process images at a faster rate – about 70-80 Hz – so their brains are moving faster than the TV. Because of that, our cats see the TV flickering, where we see a solid picture.

However, while the thought of a cop show flickering for an hour might give a person a headache, it actually might intrigue our pets. Cats stare at the TV in part because the flickering images hold their attention.

Cats can see in the dark, so the glow of the TV may be blinding.

While cats don't have as many cones in their eyes as humans do, they have many more rods. The rods in the eyes are responsible for shades of gray, peripheral vision, brightness, and night vision. A wealth of rods in their eyes gives cats far superior vision in the dark, which makes sense because cats' ancestors hunted at night.

Because they see so much better at night, the TV screen would likely appear much brighter to a cat than to a human. Not only is the TV flickering, but it would also appear as if the brightness were through the roof.

She'll occasionally put a hand (paw) up, the weather man waving his arms around seems to sometimes trigger this. Other times it's things we don't especially notice but she does. Keeps her quite interested.

We dug around because we, too, were concerned that too much TV or too close, could cause eye issues. Apparently not, according to what we found.

We had a dog that barked at the screen every time another dog appeared. Other than that, she sat quietly and watched whatever was on.
