No surprise there.

Hey Kitty! Yes, you. A new study suggests household cats can respond to the sound of their own names.

No surprise to you or most cat owners, right? But Japanese scientists said Thursday that they've provided the first experimental evidence that cats can distinguish between words that we say.

No surprise. Mine also knew what cookie, dinner, and tuna meant.

I love learning new things I already knew.

... no... wait....

I love learning what I already knew is really true.

Thank you Japanese scientists. Just hope it didn't cost you too much to find out what cat folks could have told you for free.

LOL, not only do our cats know their names, but they know the other cats' names. How do we know? Our Sadie dislikes Lucy. If we say the word "Lucy" to Sadie, Sadie will growl.

Yeah, our neighbor has a cat, Casper, who visits our yard occasionally. Until I learned Casper's name, I could not touch him, but when I called him by name, he would come up to me like we were old friends.

Or maybe I just learned his name about the same time Casper decided that I was an OK guy?

i do not think cats react to their names. The do so when it pleases them to please their humans.

Mine too. They know their names, they know their kitty sibling names. They know many words. Cats are smart. None of this is surprising.

Every single cat I have ever had knew its name and a few other words.

From the article:
Vitale, who said she has trained cats to respond to verbal commands, agreed that the new results don't mean that cats assign a sense of self to their names. It's more like being trained to recognize a sound, she said.

It might not be to the degree of humans, but I think animals do have a sense of self.

I call my cat so many different things I'm not sure she even knows she has a name.
