Horrifying.

Hopefully she gets charged with cruelty to animals, and is prevented from owning ANY animals in the future.

Cats mostly died from smoke inhalation.

I dunno. I mean, I know it can be a fine line between running a sanctuary and it being just a hoarding situation, and I don't know anything about this particular person and the situation at the house.

But I even think of the design of the large and modern shelter I've visited many times, a building opened less than 10 years ago that is purpose-built. Obviously the building design makes it somewhat less likely for there to be a fire, and maybe it has a sprinkler system (can't remember), but if they had a fire in the wrong spot it would be hard to get the cats out given the design.

So it's not a story that would be limited just to shoestring cat sanctuaries. It's quite possible for this to happen at any place that shelters cats.

This woman was rescuing, fostering, neutering/spaying and re-homing not hoarding. There was no cruelty. She had made every effort to keep the cats safely in the house. Her mistake for her own safety was not adding a door to the fenced in patio. She's probably known and appreciated by the local shelters and rescue groups. The information in the article tells me she is a very useful animal rescuer. I'm guessing she had other rescuers at her home daily to help with everything. It's very sad that the cats were killed and her home damaged and she has a wonderful dog. It's not the first story of a sanctuary burning down and it's always heart-breaking.

Edit: I just watched the video and she is part of a rescue group.

There in no defense for keeping 100 cats in a private home. This was hoarding under the pretense of rescue.

Why???..if it had been 2 cats that died instead of a hundred would you still feel the same. It was a tragedy, and could have happened to you, or him, or them...just because she has more cats than usual doesn't make her a cruel person...apparently the cats appeared to have [been] healthy.

Poor cats

She was illegally keeping most of the cats; the limit in the city is 5.

If you don't have a way to get 100 cats out in the event of a fire, then you shouldn't have them. What about an earthquake, will the house be safe? I hate to think of all those cats stuck in cages. Smoke inhalation is still not a nice way to die. Are we 100% that no cats died in the fire itself?

The chance of a fire is small. The chance of there being cats in need of a home is basically 100%....
