I live in an apartment on the 9th floor, and have just adopted two cats. My windows open by tilting out. The opening is restricted to about 6 inches, but that's large enough for a cat to get out. The windows are about 4 foot wides.

Because I have no better solution, I am keeping the windows closed, but that means no fresh air gets into the apartment. Not good! I have AC, but prefer to get some outside breeze.

I have googled for screen solutions and have asked my landlord, but have not found a solution. Any ideas??

Thanks

We have windows that tilt open (from the bottom outward with a crank). You can get screens that hang from the inside on the top of the windowframe, with hinges on top so you can pull them inward if you need to open them for any reason. They usually have little plugs on the bottoms, that fit into holes in the windowsill that exist for that reason. Or, you could get a wooden bar to fit on top of the window frame, and put holes in those, to fit the screen. You'd have to have the screen made to measure. Any ACE Hardware store will know what you need and should be able to make them for you. They're not outrageously expensive.

Basically what you do - is you pull the screen in and up from the bottom with one hand, hold it open while you push the glass window out, then let the screen back down again, where it snaps into place with those plugs on the bottom. OR - if you have crank-out windows, you don't have to do anything with the screen at all. That's what we have now, only in the bedroom - the crank-open ones. We had the old fashioned push-out ones all over the house, til we re-did our windows last year.

An inner frame made of hardware cloth stapled or screwed to a 2" X 2" wood frame will work. Attach to window frame or wall with whatever it takes to make a good attachment. When spray painted flat BLACK they're not bad looking and they do work. Depending on how the window opens (crank, lift etc) you can put them on small hinges so windows can be opened and closed.
