We got our cat in Germany 15 years ago. Now we live in Chicago.
When we got her as a kitten she had a small stuffed purple monkey , and the girl who gave us our cat , told us she liked to play with that monkey, so we kept it. She acts strange around this monkey. Carries it around in her mouth, talking to it. A few times the monkey has been lost for extended periods of time; but all of a sudden we hear our cat talking up a storm and when we look over her way,she is sitting there with her monkey. She does not do this with any other toy.
Why is that?

Aw it's sweet your kitty has her own security blanket=purple monkey. Cherish that toy (and your adorable cat), don't lose it, or she will probably become depressed.
Out of curiosity, was she spayed later than six months? It sounds like she's definitely has 'adopted' the monkey as a kitten substitute.
Our female chatters to her toys, but only when no one is around. I'll hear her downstairs in the middle of the night holding full blown conversations. In the morning, all of the toys are out of their box and strewn all over the house.
I don't think this behavior is gender specific. I think it is more prey/hunter based activity rather than any maternal feeling.
My childhood cat had a fluffy...thing...that she carried around singing with. My first cat as an adult, a male, adopted one of my pink slippers to carry around and sing with.
Another male kitty, also now a bridge angel, had a special pink furry mouse he carried and sang with. Funny both of those boys were Red boys, and they both chose something pink.
Another, female, had an old crumpled cigarette pack. I quit smoking years before, but she loved that crumpled cigarette pack. Of the current gang, one 9 year old female has a fabric place mat she carries around singing with.
And my 8 year old female, rescued as an adult stray 6 1/2 years ago, has only just started this behavior, after all these years she has finally found a toy she can relate to. I am very happy for her and go to great lenghts to make sure I find it and put it back where she likes to keep it, after she's done playing with it and carrying it around singing with it.
The youngest, while she carries her toys around, does not sing while doing it, not yet anyway. She does sing, but not while carrying toys.

My Mickey has a pink and white mouse he carries and does a special meow for. He tends to do it right after I go to bed. The other 2 cats have never done it.
