COOKEVILLE, Tennessee -- If Alan Maynard's pet cat had not jumped up onto his chest while he slept early Sunday, he might have died in a fire that was burning in the basement area of his house, Cookeville firefighters said.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. Sunday at Maynard's N. Elm St. home, which Cookeville Fire Chief John Kendrick described as "an older one-and-a half story wood house which had had two additions since its original construction."
