Question. Is your cat preferring cool or warm surfaces? The answer may be a clue as to what is going on, and you may want to mention this to your vet.

If your last vet was unable to determine the cause of the discharge, perhaps take kit to a different vet this time or, at least, seek a second opinion if your vet (again) cannot determine the cause.

My vote is for anal glands too. Have you tried to smell the brown spots?

Oh, you WILL know if it is anal glands, believe me. The discharge is extremely pungent, and once you smell anal glands' secretions, you will never forget!

Ain't that the truth! My Pumpkin had a clogged anal gland earlier this year. I caught the problem when he was whimpering in the litter pan. He didn't appreciate having it expressed, but he was better almost immediately. Did I mention it was NASTY??

I'm afraid to ask just how you went about expressing an anal gland. I'm certain I wouldn't like it either.

I've been minding a stray leaving spots behind on his bedding but I chalked it up to his ears leaking out the ear cleaner solution.

The stains don't smell at all, so I don't think it's that.

I really think it's some sort of penile discharge.

I have googled this and apparently it is common. Interestingly, most people who seem to notice this first notice their cat doing it in the bathroom, as I did. They notice the rust spots being left on the sink, etc. I noticed it as he sat on the toilet tank lid.

Did you find out what this was?....I have a female kitty that is fixed. A couple months ago I noticed this with my cat. I changed the cat litter from corn litter to another type and didn't notice anymore problems until today. She acts/eats normally and is very social so it is really confusing. I checked her rear end but I don't see any signs of bleeding there OR anyplace else.

Since this has been happening off and on for a while she needs to go to the vet.

I think I found the cause and the solution for it. If it happens again, I will come back and see if anyone else found out what caused it for their pet.
