I am looking for a water proof mattress cover that is water proof on the sides, too. As you know if someone is sitting on the side of the bed with wet pants or wet pajamas just having water proofing on the mattress top is not enough.
Some brands look like they are waterproof all over but are just waterproof on the top and I want to make sure that the mattress is protected all over. So if you have any ideas or know specific brands please let me know.
I think a zippered waterproof one would be your best bet. I think most of them are waterproof all the way around.
Thanks, I'll keep trying. I ordered one mattress pad from Amazon that sounded like it was waterproof all over and when it arrived it was only water proof on the top. I emailed two eBay sellers whose products appeared to be waterproof all over and both products were only waterproof on the top.
One of our beds has one of those fancy zippered all around bed bug protection cases and while they may be somewhat water resistant I bet that if an elderly person sat on the side of the bed in wet sweatpants/wet pajamas for a few minutes (gathering the strength to stand up) the urine would soak straight through to the mattress.
Right now I use one of those super, super thick and completely waterproof bed pads (for the once every couple of month accident - usually when hubby has a fever or is ill), but it has to be positioned in just the right spot going over the edge of the bed exactly where he sits). Once hubby is in assisted living I won't be making his bed anymore nor monitoring his fluid intake (for quantity & quality). Plus, sleeping alone he may start to get out of the other side of the bed.
Germaine, would it be possible to MacGuyver something? Such as, get a thin dollar store shower curtain liner, tuck it around the mattress on the side needed, then put the zippered waterproof liner over that?

That is my plan right now, but I can't imagine that they don't make a product that meets that need.
Germaine, I searched Amazon for "waterproof mattress cover" and found one called Utopia that claims to be waterproof on all six sides.
Queen size is like $24.
I bought a vinyl mattress cover at Walmart for 6 dollars. Since it's not zippered, it fits loosely over the mattress with a lot of slack, which may help avoid getting it torn. The previous one was about $25-30 and got torn in several places in about 3-6 months time. Time will tell since the new cover is only 2 months old.
A bedside rug also protects the floor or carpeting from urine runoff. There are rubber mats available.

Walmart carries them.
