I know most of you have probably heard about the Chilean 8.8 earthquake. But a tsunami advisory has been issued for the West Coast and Pacific Islands. I'm a California native and can't remember many tsunami warnings. While driving the Oregon coast I saw a lot of tsunami zone warning signs.

Looking at California tsunami history it looks like Crecent City was hit pretty bad by an Alaskan earthquake back in 1964. Hard to say if today's potential tsunami will do any real damage in CA. But it is good to be cautious if going down to the beach.

For the Pacific Islands the threat level is definately higher.

Supposedly the tsunami will only be two feet in southern California, probably wouldn't even notice it.

Preparations urged amid tsumani advisory for California | L.A. NOW | Los Angeles Times

I just called 310 457 9701 (I've been calling that number since like 1975) and they are reporting 1-2 poor shape waves, so maybe an extra two foot swell would be noticeable to someone out there sitting on his board. Maybe not.

It's not if but when for Hawaii although i just heard on the radio that the military isn't even moving their ships out (into deeper waters away from shore?) so that indicates that they don't expect a severe tsunami ? right? that's how i understood it but i'm not fully awake yet so don't quote me.

Yeah, an advisory is a lot lower level than a warning which the Hawaiian Islands are under.

Quote:
Warning sirens have sounded on the Hawaiian Islands to alert residents to evacuate coastal areas...
Those sirens started at 6:00AM. What a way to wake up.

Why, have you been getting a busy signal for thirty five years?

I went down to Shell Beach yesterday to watch the Tsunami, very impressive, its incarnation on our section of coast was an afternoon of high and ragged surf. The break at Pismo began the length of the pier beyond the pier, something I have never seen before, including the high storm waves of a month or so ago.
At Shell Beach the normally calm kayakable waters were a maelstrom of high, ragged and wild surf.

Lo and behold, I saw a person down in the water moving along the rocks, getting knocked off, resurfacing and moving on. Someone called the police, they show up. The guy moves out across a rock reef getting slammed by surf, gets to an offshore rock, climbs up it stays for a moment, then comes back down, now the fire department, life guards, ambulance are there. No one is excited about going in after this guy.

He disappears, then, his head shows, he is swimming in the surf zone, high waves breaking over him, jagged rocks below, he appears buoyant, I figure he is in a wetsuit, he swims back over to the narrow stretch of sand at the bottom of the stairs, the whole time getting whacked by huge waves and yet surviving, he comes out of the water and raises both hands above his head like an Olympic medalist, a lifeguard in a wet suit runs out grabs him, they both get knocked down by the next wave, but come back up the beach.

The guy comes up the stairs with the lifeguards, he is in jeans and tennies no shirt in his mid twenties with the classic tweaker look.

He was in that water close to an hour.

My first thought was that meth is an interesting drug.
