You have some good ideas here... maybe check out Santa Cruz and Capitola. Kind of an earthy, beach community with a University 5 minutes away. Also, it's bike/hike friendly and you get both mountains and surf coming together at the same place.

If it's warm weather you want, stick to Southern CA - I am a San Diego girl living in Sonoma Ca and winter here is COLD compared to Southern CA - we just finished a cold spell that spiraled down into the teens, unusual, yes, but it is routinely in the high 30's, low 40's in the winter - cold to us SoCal natives!

I've heard. Quite cold. Well I'm coming out to visit the area but I've sorta moved on to focusing on Albuquerque for greater affordability and walkability in town. Thanks!
