Yes. Even in operation, these things bleed money like stuck pigs, and need significant operating subsidies.

It's coming, anyway, despite the complaints.

California’s high-speed rail may still be a matter of carping debate in some political circles, but it’s fast becoming a reality for residents of the Central Valley. This heavily farmed region — historically separated from Los Angeles, San Francisco and the California coast by both conservative politics and physical distance — is first in line to benefit from an infrastructure project being built with tens of billions of dollars in state and federal funding.

The 171-mile stretch of rail running between Merced and Bakersfield could be operational as early as 2030, with testing of the bullet trains slated to begin in 2028, according to the High-Speed Rail Authority. The project has created more than 12,000 construction jobs, with 70% of those workers coming from the Central Valley. Authority officials cited 25 active construction sites, with the Kings/Tulare station outside Hanford being the largest. The authority is closing in on finishing 22 miles of rail north of Shafter, set to be the first segment of the rail line completed.

Trains don't go from Los Angeles to San Diego again.

The time to repair is, of course, unknown.

Train to Del Mar, get off take bus, get off, back on train, add 90 min to trip. At least it DID go to SD. This new train to Bakersfield will never see S Cal.

It started with the decision of where. Bakersfield to Merced? They of course say that it will have huge ridership which I don't think anyone really believes. I'll either just drive straight to SF or hop on a flight.

They broke ground in 2015, and won't even have this first line running until at least 2028. The LA to SF line won't even be done until well into the 2030's and that is if they keep their current schedule, which is unlikely based on their history.

By Comparison when Japan built its first "Bullet Train", it took a grand total of 5 years to get the first line up and running.
Had, until the cliffs collapsed. Now it will take years for them to figure out what to do to fix it. Tunnel? Bridge? Eminent domain? It will be in the courts forever. This just after the San Clemente episode of fail.

If this goes as planned in connecting The Bay Area with Southern California,and the other High Speed Route connecting with Vegas....This will be very beneficial for this State and for Southern Nevada.
