Maybe a decade a ago. Today hearing Spanish is taken for granted in California.

I know ten Afrikaans speakers in OC, that I recall off the top of my head, and while it's definitely a tiny sample, they are all Caucasian.[/quote]

No enclaves in the US that I'm aware of but most speakers are in Texas and Florida.

No, not an enclave, but like most expats, they know each other and like to get together even if they live an hour or two apart. So if you become good friends with one Afrikaans-speaking South African, you're going to meet some more.

Similar to my mother-in-law, from a small town in the south of Brazil, who knows a couple of dozen other people who also emigrated from this same small town. Who knew there were so many German-speaking Brazilians in California.

Well, it still enrages a poster who gets all crazy whenever he hears Spanish spoken in public. Like J. Lo's exclamation at the Inauguration.
