More kids have always gotten chickenpox, but it's been much more dangerous to the typical adult. (And of the kids with serious consequences, pre-school children probably are overrepresented.)

There was no shingles vaccine when the chickenpox vaccine was developed and first mandated. Maybe it would have been controversial had the shingles vaccine already existed.

By the way, COVID cases are shifting to someday maybe being as common in kids as adults.

Anyway, a California COVID-19 vaccine bill mandating the inoculation for school is in the news, but it's not law yet.

Ok? The CDC recommends any adult to get the chicken pox vaccine if they haven't already had it. What is your point?

Newsom already mandated it, there is a separate bill that aims to get rid of the personal exemption and full FDA approval requirement.

The USA isn't Sweden, and even child-related decisions here often have adults in mind. Believe or don't believe it.

Moreover, "Newsom's mandate is limited to grades seven through 12," and the high school part seems not controversial to many people.

Yeah I don't and you haven't proved how they do.

No it's not, grades 7-12 are just phased in earlier.

I'm about as likely to "prove" that as I am to prove that schools are partly for warehousing kids so that both parents can contribute outside the home to the economy - but many of us believe the latter to be true.

Speaking of which, why isn't there a push to send kids (maybe age 12 and up) to residential schools so that the population is mostly separated (e.g., virus transmission) from adults?

Okay, boarding school is the more common term. Of course there probably aren't any public schools of that type in the USA, but the government could create some or provide vouchers so that kids are out of the COVID pipeline. Edit: there are a few, but none in this state and possibly none in the USA that are both general admission and have all students live on campus. I found some articles with Google about the "bubble" benefit of boarding schools now. Think about it, parents.

Wait so you want to separate children from their parents into boarding schools because of COVID now?

Ever heard of a public school teacher's union?

At this point, some public school teachers would support the boarding school idea. Some parents do support it. The current setup does not work. It's based on wishful thinking or outright delusion. Teachers, students, and families are getting infected as a result. And remote learning rarely works well for kids. Separating kids from parents for a few months and letting them hang out safely with peers that they might like sounds worth considering. It would be optional, obviously. Many kids go away to summer camp (sleepaway version), and that's not considered bad for family bonds.
