“ A 104-year-old World War II veteran hopes to receive plenty of Valentine’s Day cards this year, to add to his collection of keepsakes documenting his own incredible life and times.

Maj. Bill White served in the Marine Corps during World War II and survived the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945, Fox 40 reports. One of White’s most cherished medals is his Purple Heart, which is awarded to those who were wounded or killed in action.

“The fact that I even survived is something. There weren’t too many of us,” White recalled.

White was near the front lines of the battle on March 3, 1945, when a grenade exploded about six inches from he and his fellow Marines, according to Fox 40.

The injuries he sustained took him off the battlefield, but White recovered and went on to enjoy a long military career.”

I am named after an uncle who died as a young Marine on a beachhead in the South Pacific. A major factor in my decision to enter service. My uncle’s remains have never been repatriated. I’ll be sending this Marine a card.

Thanks for posting. I will be sending this gentleman a card.

I met my cousin just a few years ago. He was just a little boy (and it was long, long before I was born), when his dad, my uncle, was killed in the Battle of the Bulge in 1945, and buried in the Luxembourg American Cemetery.

I was able to give my cousin a very old, but in perfect condition, studio portrait of his dad as a very young man, found in a box of family memorabilia that I ended up with after my parents & sister died.

We can’t forget these individuals and what they did for this country and a huge piece of the world. Thank you all for your service.

Sent my Valentine the other day. I have a picture of my father in dress uniform the day he finished basic, ready to go to Europe in 1944.

I'll send him a card as well. Both my grandfathers served in WW2; he reminds me of my paternal gf, a Marine who received a Purple Heart for injuries at Guadacanal.
