We are looking for a small mountain town to raise our daughter. Small is great but I know finding a job won't be easy. We are considering Mount Shasta Ca already but I wanted some opinions on Quincy Ca.
Schools, traveling in the snow, the people, are there home to rent for under $1200 a month?
Thanks!

Have you spent much time in a town that small and that remote? Granted, Quincy isn't outside of civilization but it depends on what you may be used to.

Rent in your range is very do-able. There isn't a lot of inventory though. To get an idea, you may want to look at the local newspaper Plumas County News. Plumas News - Plumas County News I think knowledge of most rental availabilities may be by word of mouth.

Last I new schools weren't great. I think there are some charter schools in the area and there used to be a lot of people who homeschooled.

Traveling in the snow in town during a normal winter shouldn't be a problem as long as you learn how to drive in the snow. Heavier winters like this past one are going to be different. It's difficult for a small town to keep up with snow removal. If you need to be traveling out on the highway that may be different. It can take time to get the roads clear and safe to travel and keep them clear.

The area is very conservative politically. It's a small town for all the negative and positive aspects that brings. Most people are friendly and a little cautious of new people. It can take a bit of time to establish yourself as someone who "belongs" there. People are generally good and decent.

Keep in mind you're going to have a limited choice of grocery stores, drug stores, etc. and the prices are going to be steep. Most stores charge what they can because they're pretty much the only game in town. If you're going to have to be budget conscious it may mean trips to Reno to shop. That will be 1+ hours each way.

You're right. Finding jobs won't be easy - and many jobs you'll find open now are seasonal.

Remote is the key word here.

It is quite a long slog from the more populated parts of Yuba and Butte Counties. Going the other direction, it's quite a haul from the Reno / Truckee complex.

I love Quincy and the area and go there for vacation often. It's a nice little town with Feather River community college, a hospital, a Safeway store and other amenities. Visit in August when they hold the county fair.

As for jobs, I don't know. Quincy is the county seat, so there may be county government jobs. Outside of that, I don't think there is much.
