I'm considering moving to so. cal. - LA or SD area. Looking for a beach town (or close to) that is safe with decent schools, excellent athletic programs, and an overall good quality of life. I would be renting - not buying, so housing isn't necessarily an issue.

Thanks!

What is your rental budget?
Where will you be working?
What line of work are you in?

Budget is ~$1500/mo.
Do not have work yet.
IP/Patents.
Most important is a good town for a 12 yr. old.

.. Ventura, CA. Great place for a 12 year old. It is not SD or LA but you can find a job and its a great beach town. 30 south of Santa Barbara. LA is about hour and 15 min.

Not exactly LA or SD, but what about San Luis Obispo. The beach is not too far away and it's very safe.

san luis obispo craigslist > apts/housing for rent: search

Seal Beach, CA. Los Alamitos High School has excellent athletics and there are many local pre-high school athletics(Seal Beach Pony Baseball, Los Alamitos LaCrosse, AYSO Soccer, Los Alamitos Pop Warner Football, NJB Basketball, etc).

You can rent houses in Seal Beach, but unsure of the cost. Up the road 10 minutes(away from the coast) is Los Alamitos itself, which has plenty of affordable apts. Decent 2bedroom apts run from 1100 to 1500.

Long Beach is right up the road and is a major business center, so I imagine that would be the easiest place to find work in your field.

Huntington Beach is a good town too. Very family oriented. Great schools in the Oceanview district...awesome library and park system. Lots of great sports, scouting etc...My family loved it when we lived there.

In South Orange County there are several beach communities or communities relatively close to the beach but not at beach pricing with good schools, etc. Check out Capostrano and Saddleback Valley School Districts. Aliso Viejo and Mission Viejo are great communities with good schools, sports etc and maybe 15 minutes from the beach. Further South you have San Clemente and or San Juan Capistrano.

the only "non-safe" beach communities that I can think of anywhere in southern california are Long Beach and Venice. Venice is way out of your budget, but even Long Beach has its really nice parts too (ie Belmont Shore). However, $1500 rent anywhere within a mile of the coast is not going to get you much. If you guys don't mind splitting a 1 bedroom, you'll be okay, but it will be hard to find a 2 bedroom for that price.
