I need a change and I'm considering finding some seasonal work in Mammoth this winter. I really enjoy the Sierra and I liked the town of Mammoth a lot but it feels like it's pretty poshy and I'm not sure if I could swing the rent bills since I spent virtually all my money this past year traveling.

Anyone here have experience with Mammoth or live there? Any insight would be appreciated.

Hi! I have a cousin who lives in Mammoth. I also have a sister who lives in Big Pine, CA which is south of Mammoth and Bishop. From what I know, Mammoth is pretty expensive. You might consider looking at Bishop or Big Pine. Just a thought - you would definitely still be closer to Mammoth.

Food is more expensive in Mammoth, probably because Mammoth is a resort town. Also, do you like snow - LOTS of snow? These past couple of years haven't been so great, because of the state-wide drought, but some years they get dumped on. I'm not sure how much work would be available now, or if it would pay enough for you to actually live there. Have you applied for any jobs, or at least seen what they're paying?

Probably true, but I think I'd rather live in a neighborhood with bars on the windows like Pacoima or Santa Ana than somewhere where people have to afford heated seats for their cars.

Gonna have to disagree. Mammoth is a resort town, rents are very expensive there. Just did a quick search on zillow (which I realize is not a great sample size), and a 1 bedroom is going for $1600/month. And 2 bedrooms are well over $2000/month. Yikes.

Really? There is something to be SAID about living in a place that does not require bars in one's window. Ghetto verses a resort town. Why settle for a crime ridden area unless you are trapped economically?

Truth be told, heated seats are pretty common in modern cars. Kinda like saying cell phones are a luxury. May have been the case 15 years ago.

There are plenty of people who can no easier give up good weather than a crack addict can give up a crack pipe. When I lived in SoCal I had to shake my head at how often other transplants listed weather as the primary reason for their move. Yeah, they liked other things too, but weather was the primary factor. They wouldn't have moved there if there was a chance a snowflake might land on their nose. They were willing to give up everything they know as home for good weather. They were willing to leave family and life-long friends for weather alone.

Don't be surprised. There are a large number of people who would indeed rather have bars on their windows than snow in the driveway. CA is especially chock full of them. Nothing wrong with it, although that definitely doesn't describe me.

OP, Google Street View has most of Mammoth covered now. They took their images in the winter. You can get a good feel for how much snow it gets.
