Recently I have learned that scorpions are not just an issue for Arizona, Texas, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico and California. I had planned to move back to Orange County. After finding out that scorpions are quite common in Southern California I changed my mind.
So then I decided to look in Fresno and Bakersfield and turns out they have scorpions too.
There was mention that Santa Cruz County has them also. I don't consider Fresno and Santa Cruz as southern California.
Santa Cruz is about a 2 1/2 hr drive from the S>F bay area and that Frsno is about 3 1/2.

So now I have determined since there was no mention of Sacramento and Sonoma County that maybe it was safer away from the scorpions. I still don't think that santa Cruz is as far away as I wish it to be.
I wish I can talk to an expert on this. I don't believe that Fresno and Santa Cruz are in desert area.
Yet the temperatures throughout the year are fair about the 70's.

I don't think that Sacramento or Sonoma County are much cooler the Fresno and Santa Cruz.

I would like to ask members here do you think the scorpions will stay where they are at?
Is it possible that scorpions will start traveling north to the Bay area and even as far as Sacramento and Sonoma County? If you think this is likely and possible please tell me why?
If you don't think so then also tell me why.

I am asking this because if they can survive in Fresno I woud also assume they can survive also more north then that.

Well, I guess they can survive in Fresno. But I've never run across a scorpion in my life here. I'm in Sunnyside on an acre and not within city limits here. Just had a mountain lion kill a neighbors goat though.

Been here in Fresno off and on since 1977.

Sacramento is similar to Fresno heat wise, just not quite as hot and they get the delta breeze up there. Santa Cruz is cooler as it's over on the coast.

Scorpions ain't in enough numbers here for me to worry about at all. Just check your shoes before you put em on if you are that worried.

That's a really strange reason to avoid an area. I don't think I've ever seen a scorpion in OC but I don't spend too much time in the undeveloped areas.

Scorpions are not strictly desert dwellers. There are scorpions as far north in California as Humboldt county.
I would not the presence of scorpions stop you from moving someplace.
I lived in Southern California for 4 years and visited often in the summer and never saw a single scorpion. Growing up in the bay area, and spending time in Santa Cruz, I never saw a scorpion. In the 20 plus years I've lived in Northern California (Mendocino and Humboldt) I have seen a total of 3 and all three were found in the stacks of firewood kept outside. This was also when I was living on acres of meadows and woods, not in a town or city.
You would hav to go out into natural areas and be turning over rocks and downed trees to encounter a scorpion.

If ya wanna worry about something here in Fresno, worry about Black Widows. Be careful around fences and around any crapola ya might have on your property.

The OP's geography is a bit off. Santa Cruz is a mere 30 - 40 minutes from the South Bay and 1 to 1-1/2 hours from the Central Bay.

I have seen scorpions even here in the Bay proper, in the areas with poor soils, south facing slopes and a more arid look. Even here in Central San Mateo County.

I've lived in Oakland and Lafayette the past for over 25 years now, and I've never seen a scorpion anywhere I've lived.

Thanks for what you have been able to share. After the reading I have done it seems they are more common in many open areas whether high or lowlands. Maybe I am wrong but it seems when a city is more landlocked scorpions seem to be less in those areas. Arizona has a lot of free land for scorpions to get about while Fresno, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego have a lot of open areas also in between houses and cities.

I guess it is still possible there could be some in the bay area as the last poster mentioned.

I used to live in Newark, Union City, Fremont, Hayward, and San Leandro and have never seen a scorpion. I’ve also been in San Rafael and Novato and have not seen one.

I am vision impaired and I think that is why my senses of creepy crawly things is alarming in my thoughts. Meaning I can’t run or walk away from what I can’t see. I’m not a big fan of spiders either.

Would you suppose living in San Jose in a well kept apartment on the grounds of the premises plus keeping the apartment clean we would not have much to worry about pests? I’m looking into San Jose since it is more landlocked than Sacramento. It is not as many wildernesses where I would think Scorpions, spiders and other pests thrive on more. We use plug ins to scare away mice. It might be good for insects also. In San Jose I don’t think any concern of rattle or any snakes. If apartments are maintained, managed, well kept and clean there is not much of a chance of scorpions or any threatening pests? I know we can’t escape Bumble bees.
