Still, an individual's personal circumstances outweighs the state's circumstances. Better to be employed in the state with the highest unemployment than unemployed in the state with the lowest unemployment. And, the differences between states isn't that much overall. When you get specific, say jobs in your field, then it becomes more meaningful.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but given people vote, the majority vote wins, and people vote for what they think will be beneficial, wouldn't optimism often rise after most elections?

Either way, I'm happy people are happier.

This last rise started before the election.

I think part of the rise from the trough of 2008-2010 is a combo of the discontented leaving being replaced with people that want to succeed. Well, we never really get rid of the discontented from this forum, but you know what I mean.

If you look here Employment (PPIC Key Stats)
The unemployment was dismal, far worse than the national average, in 2008-2010. We are now improving at a rate faster than the US. If you click the "Unemployment rate by county" link, you can see the bay area and coastal southern California are doing pretty well.

Some people form opinions on old data and some use current data.

Talk about a bias! What makes you think that those who left didn't want to succeed? Did it occur to you that at the time they left they didn't see a clear route to success in California based upon the data that was available at the time they made their decision? Your assumption is invalid. But yes, I do know what you mean. Anyone who doesn't agree with you is automatically in the wrong.

I didn't say those that left did not want to be successful. It is more that I am of the opinion that part of the reason for the trough in 2008-2010 and the rise since is because many discontented people have left. I assume they are in fact looking for more success elsewhere. That is fine. Maybe the graph would be similar in your location.

No recent major earthquakes, floods, landslides, droughts, wildfires, tsunamis, or Santa Ana winds!

(Quick: Where's the wood to knock on?)

Or perhaps you are not seeing things that are in plain view.
