You do realize that South County has alot of common in SoCal right?
Darn, I had forgotten, they speak English there too. Are you turning into User? Arguing for the sake of arguing? Why don't you leave the internet alone, start dating young ladies, go for a hike with one, take her to supper, you know, do what other "young people" do.

Wow the secuirty deposits are killers on many of the places I have been doing research on. Here in Houston, the rental market is fairly competitive (although rents are rising quickly), and many places have promotions for reduced security deposits, etc. I am not seeing much of that at least online, but maybe I will have more luck in person if I visit in a few weeks.

The rent is certainly doable on my expected salary, but after moving 2,000 plus miles a secuirty deposit will be tight. Thank goodness my potential employer has said they are flexible on when I move out there, giving me until the end of the year/early January.

Call rental agencies here, explain your circumstances, see if they can cut you a break, having letters of recommendation from Houston may help.

My mother escaped from Dixie, Atlanta to Santa Maria in 1947 when she married my dad. She has always been darned happy to get out of the heat and humidity. She got to the point where she would not go back at all in the summer, not even for relatives funerals.

AG and Pismo will get closer to their cap by 2020, and will probably not surpass it.
U19, have you ever thought that maybe you might be discussing these "caps" with a professional who knows a thing or two that "caps" don't exist with the exception of either a)water, b) sewer?

Oh I forgot about the extraordinarily high security deposits out here. You would not believe what we had to put down for a 3 bed house....drum roll ~9K It was first and last month’s rent plus a 3K security deposit!

It would be great if you could secure a place when you are out here...I hate to tell you this but most places you rent from are going to require a large security deposit. It's another one of those CA things

Sometimes, imho, some folks wood be better off buying a gently used 5th wheel, pull trailer, motorhome, etc & live somewhere like McAlpine Lake & Park. The monthly rent is $600, including electric, septic, water, & garbage Home
Camping/RVs

My beloved niece & her two son's bought a used 5th wheel, & really enjoyed their time living in this park, fishin, exploring the area, etc.

There might be an rv park somewhat like McAlpine close to Lake Nacimiento & San Antonio Lake, or even SLO.

You realize that you far exceeded the amount you needed to pay in a security deposit, per state law right? It's called renter's rights. Know them before signing anything:

California Department of Consumer Affairs:
Quote:
The law limits the total amount that the landlord can require you to pay as a security deposit. The total amount allowed as security depends on whether the rental unit is unfurnished or furnished and whether you have a waterbed.

Unfurnished rental unit: The total amount that the landlord requires as security cannot be more than the amount of two months' rent. If you have a waterbed, the total amount allowed as security can be up to two and-a-half times the monthly rent.

Furnished rental unit: The total amount that the landlord requires as security cannot be more than the amount of three months' rent. If you have a waterbed, the total amount allowed as security can be up to three-and-a-half times the monthly rent.

Plus first month's rent: The landlord can require you to pay the first month's rent in addition to the security deposit.
So you got hosed.

I've recently seen 2 bd 1 bath apartments for $800 in Santa Maria. I would recommend moving to one of the smaller towns though as Santa Maria is rather ghetto and run down.

No we did not get hosed

The security deposit was 3K.

To move in we had to pay first and last months rent. We did not get hosed. The security deposit was only 3K. So when we move out we put in a 30 day notice and have already paid for those last 30 days. Sweet!

Our landlord went strickly by the renters rights you just posted. Do the math.

OK I just found my paper work for when I registered my car for the first time in CA from out of state. I paid 895$ on a brand new car that was purchased in TX. The biggest chunk of the cost was the CA User Fee (i.e CA sales tax) The CA sales tax for my car was 1850$. In TX I paid 1250$ in sales tax when I purchased my car there. CA will charge you the difference between the state you came from tax rate and CA's tax rate. Thus I got a credit for 1250$ but still owed 600$ plus all of the other fees that charge you when you register your car here.

Total cost to register my out of state car in CA was 895$

Thankfully the company that relocated me here paid that for me
