So I love the town of Santa Barbara, the weather is perfect and I enjoy going there for a quick holiday when I need it. However I must ask, is it conservative or liberal, and to what extent? I know that UCSB is a school I'm looking at, and they are probably all around liberal, but on the other side of town there's Westmont, who is very conservative to the point that they don't even have LGBT support groups. I also know Katy Perry is from there, and claims she grew up in a very sheltering, Christian family. I heard Goleta is more progressive/liberal though, I also noticed that Santa Barbara did vote no on 8 in 2008. Any other insight y'all can give me?
Cheers!

So Cal beach towns typically don't fit "conservative" or "liberal" as you would classify them in today's politics. They're typically live and let live. A lot of interesting people move to those towns and most people just want to do whatever it is they're already doing rather than worry about other people. SB does fit this in my experience, but because of the expense there are good and bad neighborhoods and plus there are areas inland that don't have that beach mentality.

Santa Barbara/Goleta is quite liberal however there are some conservative areas (Montecito can be slightly more conservative). UCSB in general is VERY liberal with an active LGBT community. Even the right leaning people seem very accepting of LGBT issues. Westmont is pretty conservative as it is a Christian college (and they want their staff etc to adhere to the Christian way of life).

I know people who have worked with Katie Perry and have said she is the nicest person around!

I live in SB and know quite a bit about UCSB. Feel free to DM me any questions!

Since I've lived here i've seen stark contrasts. A lot of the "middle" class people seem to be typically more liberal, however SB has quite a few rich people and they tend to be conservative. But I would mostly say its liberal.

SB is pretty much a swing county in California. Goleta and I.V. tend to be the most liberal parts of the county.

The county went red for Nixon in '68 and '72, blue for Carter in '76, red for Reagan in '80 and '84, red for Bush sr in '88 but it has been blue every election since including voting for Kerry over Bush in '04.

I think it is fair to call it a swing county which has shown a definite blue trend.
