I hope that this thread doesn't get lost in the shuffle. My husband and I have narrowed it down to Eureka Ca or Salida Co.
Now I have been reading some of the post here on the Cali forum about Eureka, some of which has been bright and wonderful where as others are more like reading an obituary.
We are both in the hospitality business, worked in seafood and in production. So you see that starting a new career isn't at all impossible. As far as living conditions we don't require alot of foo and fluffy stuff. We don't want a spawling huge house it only the 2 of us, but then again we don't want a small cracker box either. I don't want to insult anyone in either state by saying something wrong, but we really are looking for someplace that we can lay our head and work a job we enjoy and maybe venture out into the wilderness now and then for a hike or a camp. Let me add that weather is not an issue at all.
Rent wise, anything below 1000.00 a month would be a blessing. Job wise just doenst matter. Life wise matter's.

Everyone has a different view of their town. So you just get to hear both sides.

I highly suggest using craigslist.org to see out rent info. Also, checking the local papers online helps out alot too.

I'm in the process of moving out of CA, and craigslist & the local paper have been a large help in our move to NV.

For information/news on the Eureka area, check out ; eurekareporter.com and times-standard.com , they are our two local daily papers. You can also check out kiem-tv.com , it is our local channel 3 . They have good connections to different sites on their site. Eureka has the unfortunate destinction of being the county seat, has the court house, sherrifs and jail all in one location. 101 travels right down the center of the town, so the traffic there is greater. But life is much slower here compared to down south. Cost of living for food, gas and supplies are higher, but services cost less and home prices and rents are lower.
