Hi , I was thing of moving to CA. I was thinking about the Humboldt area, but from what I read it is a small town. This is what I want, but I was wondering about the availibility of jobs in the area. I was thinking about living in humboldt and working in S.F. Can anyone tell me how many hours it takes to drive from Eureka to S.f.?
Any info on this would be much appreciated.

I don't know about jobs in Humboldt county, but the drive from Eureka to San Francisco, down the 101, is at least 4 hours.

Check out Half Moon Bay or Pacifica if you want a small coastal town. They're a LOT closer to San Francisco. Eureka in Humboldt county doesn't have much in the way of jobs. The lumber mills closed a while back. There is talk about improving the port to handle container ships from China - but it's just talk.

If you wanted to live in Humboldt county it would be best to get one of our local papers and job hunt here. It is out of the question to try and commute from here to S.F. on a regular basis, on a good day if you do not get caught up in bad traffic in Santa Rosa it will take you 5 hours doing the speed limit or no more than 4 miles over you may push it to 4 and a half. In the winter it can be impassable from the southern part of the county through Mendocino county due to heavy snow down to valley floors. The good part about up here is there is so little traffic that the local commute is rapid. You can go the 85 +- miles between McKinleyville north of Eureka and Garberville in the southern part of the county in a little more than an hour. Crescent city is 69 miles north and Oregon is 20 more. Eureka is the largest town at 28,000 and Arcata and McKinleyville follow with 17,000 and 15,000 +- people. There are only 130,000 in the county. Try the job market here first , the rents are cheaper than further south and so are the home prices, which are at a low of $299,000 for a new 3 bed, 2 bath home and $100,000 or so more for an ocean view. McKinleyville is the fastest growing town in the county.
