Those darned terrible California Schools....

Quote:
Arroyo Grande High School ranked in top 1.6% of nation's public high schools

Posted 10:49 PM 7/15/2011 by Courtney Meznarich (DL)
Arroyo Grande High School is making the grade. The campus was just named to Newsweek's list of America's Best High Schools.
Arroyo Grande ranked 436 out of 27,000 public schools, putting it in the top 1.6 percent of schools nationwide.
My daughter went into Cal Poly with 20 credits already completed due to the AP classes.
She aced the National AP Calculus test
and is running a 4.0 average at Poly.

I'd say AG High did a great job. this in spite of those who complain about CA schools.

Nice job by both AGHS and your daughter.

AGHS was the 46th best in California in that ranking list. But also in SLO County, Morro Bay High School ranked slightly higher at 45th best in California and 432nd best nationwide.

Anecdotes vs. bigger pictures...

When someone leaves out the source link to their data.. There's a reason ...
Two sources :
Arroyo Grande ranked among America's best high schools by Newsweek | The Tribune & SanLuisObispo.com
> Excerpt : The top two high schools according to the rankings are both located in Dallas, Texas.

America's Best High Schools - Newsweek

1 School of Science and Engineering Magnet Dallas TX 21 100 17.2 100 1786 2.874
2 School for the Talented and Gifted Magnet Dallas TX 15 100 16.7 93 1885 2.807
3 BASIS Tucson Tucson AZ 12 100 13.2 96 1854 2.531
4 Stanton College Preparatory Jacksonville FL 22 99 11.8 99 1864 2.175
5 Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science Bowling Green KY 19 100 9.1 100 2053 2.163
6 Jefferson County IB School Birmingham AL 18 100 11.5 100 1860 2.104
7 Signature School Evansville IN 20 98 10.3 100 1766 1.929[/b]
8 University Irvine CA 34.5 98 3.2 96 1920 1.824
9 Suncoast Community Riviera Beach FL 25 99 10.8 100 1737 1.698
10 North Hills Preparatory Irving TX 11.3 99 9.5 92 1716 1.669
11 Carnegie Vanguard Houston TX 15.8 100 8.9 96 1801 1.662
12 International School Bellevue WA Not Provided 100 8.2 100 1893 1.658
13 Loveless Academic Magnet Program (LAMP) Montgomery AL 20 100 8.4 100 1850 1.64
14 Pine View School for the Gifted Osprey FL 25 100 7.1 99 1943 1.612

As far as Anecdotes, me personally.. I went to a highschool not even on the list in Florida (oh the horrible south).. Attended the top University for my intended major .. Came in w/ 30 units from AP courses and 36 units from college courses already taken. Finished my Bachelors in 3 years. Masters in 1 year.

Take a look at the schools listed.. the big observation is that the cream are separated from the crop (through various ways) and allowed to succeed... At those schools, they have better rankings (DUH).

The data says nothing for or against California (in the bigger picture) .. It mostly says that there are talented schools/kids all over the nation (as one would expect) .. Many of the top schools are not in California .. They're in Texas.... In FL ...

There are great highschools in CA .. and there are very horrible schools in CA ... Same trend can be said for many states.
I am sure if you dig deep and try to extract meaning you will find the big difference is the composition of the student body is 'filtered' in many different ways...
Why are magnet schools in the top rankings? They filter people... You have to pass an IQ test.. the curriculum is very rigorous.. There aren't any idiots acting a fool in the classrooms.. Everyone's focused. I attended Magnet schools all the way until highschool.

*Go figure .. There's a world beyond California

Note that Fresnofacts post was laudatory, while yeahthatguy's post was whining ....again....

Really sport, you need a hobby, any 28 year old kid that hanging around on a forum instead of out chatting up the ladies needs to get out more.

Did I tell you that my 29 year old son is off in India teaching girls from poor families who would not otherwise get an education from a bright young American?

You could do that, seems like it beats sitting around complaining about how tough you have it in this horrible decaying state.

Help the world...

The interesting part about AGHS doing so well is that it is about half Mexican-American, and a substantial proportion of those kids are children of illegals..

The best high school in the nation is Thomas Jefferson in Northern Virginia but they apparently chose not to participate.

We should be proud that our Californian high schools are recognized by the Newsweek's ranking, while recognizing that we need to harder to improve the schools that didn't make the list.

I am highlighting the data/facts that you didn't care to because they went against your usual California propaganda.. I'm not 28 .. far from it.. (much younger). Did I tell you that I have travelled the world and America ? Germany, Italy, Spain, Signapore, china, japan. That I participate in several funds that build schools in Guam.. India.. Burma?

I do that and more .... and still manage to post on a forum.. It's amazing right?

As far as AGHS .. The city itself is almost 80% white.. The composition of the student body :
Arroyo Grande High School in Arroyo Grande, CA
Arroyo Grande High School Students by Ethnicity:
American Indian - 14 (1%)
Asian - 103 (5%)
Black - 19 (1%)
Hispanic - 564 (25%)
White - 1525 (67%)

You could have posted the data without your usual propaganda, name calling, and childish behavior but you choose not to .. So I am kindly correcting it for you. My post is keeping the cheer-leading fest in perspective.. States that you go on a rip tear bashing have schools that rank way higher than CA ..

And no, the 'hispanic' population of AGHS highschool's students isn't anywhere near half nor is there any data backing the claim that they are illegals.. You like to spin data all the time when its convenient to your twisted theories and when it's not you flat out lie.

What makes some older people spread such nonsense, lies, and misinformation around the world ? Is it that they have reached an age.. Reached a point in life that they don't to learn anymore .. don't want to contradict any of their long dated views? Maybe your son wouldn't have to be half way around the world trying to educate people if his daddy wasn't spending every waking moment trying to misinform people.

Yeah, I'm young.. Well traveled . Monied .. Educated .. and one thing I think is most wrong w/ the world are grown adults stifling the flow of correct/factual information and ruling over people w/ b.s foolishness/nonsense.. So, I'm sorry that I broke up your propaganda parade .. Try again next time.
